Climb Via Corda Alpina
Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France
Description
Added by Sophie Nicholson
Fantastic 600m bolted climbing adventure. Amazing views of the Chamonix valley, the Drus, the Aiguilles Rouges and Mont Blanc. Easy climbing, perfect for beginners and kids (max grade 3c). Tops out at a beautiful buvette situated under the Drus.
Whether you choose to move together or pitch the route, this is incredibly fun and a spectacular journey. It is normally quiet as most climbers who come to Chamonix are focused on slightly more hardcore objectives.
From the parking area, cross the river, turn left, and follow the trail to its natural conclusion. After about 15 minutes you will see a wooden signpost 'La Norvege'. Via Corda Alpina starts there.
The route is 600m in length, easy angle and follows a series of small crags separated by ledges in the woods. Route finding takes a little care, so make sure you look out for the cairns and the bolts that guide the way. Take your time to make sure you're going in the right direction! The route uses trees for belays rather than bolts, so if you're climbing with inexperienced people and pitching the route, make sure you've got the right kit and know how to use it.
Around the middle of the route there is a long, left-hand traverse that leads to some rolling slabs. This is a great spot for lunch or a snack, with views towards Flegere and the Aiguilles Rouges.
After around 3 hours of climbing, you will arrive at the Buvette des Mottets, a beautiful log cabin with fabulous alpine flowers, a small pond, and deckchairs. Pull up a pew, sip on a cold beverage, and gaze up at the spectacular Drus before taking the path back down to town.
The walk back to the car takes around an hour. Once you're back down in the valley, head to the MBC Pub & Restaurant for a pint on your way back into Chamonix. The MBC is Chamonix's infamous micro brewery, run by some Canadians who serve great beer and enormous plates of nachos. Go for it, you've earned it!
Remember to check the weather forecast ahead of time, and see here for more information on Via Corda Topo.
Getting there: From Chamonix, take the road towards Argentiere and turn right at the roundabout as you come into the village of Les Praz. Follow the road until the end and park where you see other cars parked in the woods on the right.
