Scenic short hike with great opportunities for photography, camping, fishing and relaxation in the Uintas.
Weir Lake is one of many mountain lakes located in the High Uintas near Kamas, Utah. The trail can be accessed off the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway about 33 miles east of Kamas and starts at the Crystal Lake Trailhead. There is a parking lot near the start of the trailhead, but expect it to be fairly congested in the summer with multiple access to other trails/lakes close by. Don't worry though you will have all the seclusion you need on the trail once you get going.
I found the hike to be a fairly easy going trail, with a couple areas of rocky incline to make you feel like you are getting a good work out. Overall, excellent trail for both a daytrip or if you are looking for a beginner backpacking endeavor. As always bring plenty of water and some food for the day. Also highly recommend a fishing pole as there are plenty of fish to be caught with multiple lakes in the area.
The hike itself starts at the northwest end of the parking lot. Shortly after leaving the Crystal Lake Trailhead, the trail begins to climb about 1 mile in. The trail then starts to descend as it heads east toward Long Lake. About a half mile in you will encounter a junction. Choose the trail on the left, with signs to Weir and Duck Lakes. From here you will pass through peaceful meadows till you hit a small junction to Marjorie Lake. Take a detour here for some quick photos or a shot at catching some fish. If not stay on the trail for another half mile till you arrive to Weir Lake.
Once you hit Weir Lake take some time to venture around the lake for great views. There is a designated campsite near the dam that provides a great area to set up for the night. If you are hit with the exploration bug you can continue on the trail up to Duck Lake, but I found Weir Lake less traveled and a better place to sit in the fresh mountain air.
