An easy, scenic coastal shoreline walk. Perfect for nature enthusiasts and dog walkers. The trail offers views of the Sooke Harbour and the Juan de Fuca Strait.
Located in Sooke, between the Sooke Harbour and the Juan de Fuca Strait is Whiffin Spit Park. An easy 2.4km out and back trail with minimal elevation gain that you can walk to the end and back in about an hour.
The dog-friendly gravel trail takes you down the spit to the end where you will find a lighthouse. There are plenty of wooden benches along the path to give you the opportunity to sit back and enjoy the beauty of the harbour, the coastline, and the Olympic mountains across the Strait.
Small trails can take you off the primary trail and allow you to stop at different viewpoints or bring you down to the shoreline (which varies from sandy beach to pebbles, and large rocks.) Driftwood, kelp, and shells are washed up along the shore from the Pacific ocean, and shorebirds, bald eagles, crabs, seals and sea lions can be spotted.
Note: There is minimal shade along the spit, and it can get windy so do bring appropriate sun-protection and attire.
Getting there: Whiffin Spit is located in Sooke (about 40 minutes west of Victoria). Take Highway 14 to Whiffin Spit Road and follow the road to the end where you will find a parking lot for the park.
