A super popular, super scenic, and easy ride out of Chamonix Valley. Great way to experience the Alps by bike!
This classic cycling destination out of Chamonix Valley is perfect for reasonably fit people looking to summit a mountain pass on wheels. Col des Montets (1,462 m) is on County Road D1506 that connects France to Switzerland, and it was even included in the Tour de France in the 50s through the 70s. Check road conditions on the Chamonix tourism site before setting off.
You can begin this trip anywhere out of Chamonix, starting on D1506 heading northeast. Follow signs towards Les Praz or Argentiere and continue your way up to the top of the Col. There are signs for cyclists all along the way, announcing the changing grade of the road and your distance to the top of the Col.
Altitude at each point:
- Les Praz: 1,060 m (3,477 ft.)
- Argentiere: 1,252 m (4,101 ft.)
- Col des Montets: 1,461 m (4,793 ft.)
The first two thirds of your ride will be on a manageable grade, but past Argentiere you’ll start to feel the elevation gain. This road is very biker-friendly and cars are used to a cyclist-heavy road. The villages of Les Praz and Argentiere are busy and full of cafes and restaurants in case you want to stop for coffee, snacks, or a classic Savoyard meal.
Take your time, bring plenty of water, and enjoy the views!
