Rock Climb Horsethief Butte
Lyle, Washington
Description
Added by Emily Walbridge
Great rock for beginner outdoor climbers!
Located on the Washington side of the Columbia River Gorge heading east on highway 14 at milepost 85. Pull into the parking lot on the right hand side of the road and the trailhead is located by the restrooms. Be cautious on warm days because this is rattlesnake country. There are signs posted with additional warnings.
This is a great place for beginner climbers to exercise those newly acquired outdoor climbing skills or for intermediate climbers to use as a refresher with climbing, belaying or rappelling skills. Anchors are not set in most areas so bring your own along with safety gear.
Once at the park, follow the trail for 1/2 mile to the rock face and pick your spot! This is a popular climbing spot so be prepared to go early.
Not only is this a great place for climbing, there are spectacular views of the gorge and the common spotting of a Bald Eagle flying overheard.
After a day of climbing practice head east on Highway 14 to the campground for a peaceful evening by the river. Check the Washington State Park website for current fees, directions and notices.
